Amine El Gotaibi Moroccan, b. 1983
In 2016, a monumental project, Attorab Al Watani /
National Territory explores the meaning of the phrase "etching one’s place
in history" by combining performance, sculpture, photography and video. El
Gotaibi explores anew the battle of the individual against the forces which
marginalise him and deprive him of his right to fulfilment and creation.
Amine El Gotaibi delivers a manifesto there on his own country, which he
says does not allow the individual to settle or, as the saying goes, "to
make his name in history". To invite citizens to action, he then decided
to put his own in the earth. El Gotaibi literally "tested" the
national territory by traveling 18,000 km through the twelve regions of Morocco
to carve his own name in monumental letters. A repeated performative act in
which the artist, voluntarily wearing a traditional farmer’s costume, dug the
ground for eight hours. He chose for these empty areas, in the middle of
nature.
